If you're reading this post, you probably know about the importance of being grateful. And you know that you should be always writing down the lists of the things you are grateful for. Because only when we are grateful for the things we do have, will we have the things that we don't have yet. Until we become grateful for the things we have, we will never ever have enough.

But sometimes it just doesn't work. There are days when it's so hard being grateful because our mind is focused on this one thing that we don't have. Or we can't find anything to be grateful for in the moment and writing those lists seems just faking it. So, what should you do? There are some tips that I could give you that will make being grateful easier for you.

Naturally, our brains are built in such way that we remember negative experiences better. Why? Because we need them for our survival. We need to remember negative experiences, so that we don't get hurt again. When you learn this, you will not get upset for being so negative all the time because you will realize that it's normal for a human being to be that way. But it doesn't mean that focusing on positive things in your life is not possible at all. It is possible, but harder. You have to work two times harder to achieve this, to remember positive things that happened to you.

The universe and everyone you meet respond to the energy you bring to the world. And gratitude is one of the ways to generate such positive energy that will bring more positive things to your life.

Consider the things that make you happy

Think about your lists not as grateful lists, but lists that make you happy and write down the tings that made you happy instead. If it doesn't work either, just reflect on the things that helped to make your day bearable. For example, talking to your mom, taking a shower, watching your favorite show, or accomplishing your project's goals.

Once the day is over, make your list

Many people tell you to write down your list first thing in the morning to start your day with the right attitude. But I personally can't do that because I am just not in the mood in the morning. If you are anything like me, I suggest you writing in the evening instead when the day has finished. Everything is still fresh in your head and you remember all the things you have done that day. Projects you have accomplished, people you have met, and the small things that brought you joy. This rule to make a list every evening will also motivate you to have a productive day, so that you have something to write every single day.

Do not include any 'shoulds'

Forget about all the things that people say you should be grateful for. If you don't feel genuinely grateful for it, writing it down insincerely will not change anything. Write only the things that are true for you only. Faking it will just make things worse.

Find out why you are thankful

Thinking about why you are grateful for these things might make your list have a greater impact on your life. The same thing might have a different meaning for everyone, depending on their personality and circumstances. For example, I am grateful for being able to write an article a day because it helps me with my self-esteem and keeps me healthy. For someone else, it might be because it helps them to earn money and survive.

To achieve your goals, be grateful

The main rule of the power of gratitude is to focus on the thing you have in order to get the things you don't have yet. The same thing applies to your goals. For example, I want to write better. In order to achieve this goal, I have to focus on the things that are already helping me to achieve this goal. Here are the reasons I should be grateful:

  • I write in my journal every day
  • I have access to YouTube and blogs that can teach me to write better
  • I can read books
  • I can write
  • I can retell the things that I read about
Saying thank you for the things you already have while working towards more things to have is a wonderful way to draw more positive energy to your life.
